Boeuf Bourguignon with Cheesy Mash

Not the cheapest dish on this blog but I like to put a little ‘more’ into weekend meals…and still cheaper than going out!

I love visiting France. I mean, why would a girl who loves food not love a place that has a culture based around food?

I just love the way each meal is created with care and attention. Nothing about it is rushed and every mealtime creates a sense of occasion. In our British, fast-paced culture, we could certainly learn a lot from the habits the French have adopted towards food. If you haven’t had a go at making a French dish before, this is a fairly simple one…and like the French philosophy it simmers slowly in a ton of red wine. It allows dinner time to be what it should be: a leisurely event, enjoyed by the whole family. It is a perfect Sunday lunch recipe.

I used my slow cooker for this recipe. If you don’t have one you could make it in a casserole dish in the oven, but that’s maybe not as economical.



150g mushrooms, chopped (54p, Aldi)

700g diced beef (£4.69, Aldi)

3 heaped tbsps of flour (3p)

Oil for frying (1p)

180g bacon, cut into squares (20p, Aldi)

140g onion, diced (9p, Aldi)

250ml beef stock, made from 4 cubes (12p, Aldi)

2 large cloves of garlic, minced (9p)

750ml red wine (£2.89, Aldi)

1 bouquet garni (24p, Asda)

For the mash – Potatoes (14p) Cheese (37p)


Sear the beef in hot oil until brown on the edges ( about 3 mins a side)

Put flour in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.

Pour beef on top of the flour and mix with 2 spoons to evenly coat.

Fry the bacon in the pan that the beef came out of. Fry until slightly pink

Put all the ingredients (including the beef and bacon but not the cheese and potatoes!) into the slow cooker and cook on low for about 7 hours. Depends on your cooker though..Use your initiative.

Just before serving, boil the potatoes to make mash. When cooked, drain and mash with a potato masher. Stir in grated cheese and season if you want.
